Watering Vine Crops

Black plastic is sometimes used as a weed control method in vine crops. The biggest drawback to this method is that it causes uneven water penetration into the soil. Zucchini, cucumbers, and melons are over 80% water and will quickly show the results of this or any uneven watering. A recommended way to properly water these plants is to bury an open bucket or jug with small holes drilled in the bottom to a depth of 3 to 4 inches. Place a layer of gravel in the bottom of your jugs or buckets. You can then fill these containers with a hose or watering can and let the water slowly sink into the soil.
